Love this monitor!, January 31, 2009 By JMS (Lake Worth, Florida United States)
"This is my second Summer Infant video monitor...my first was the basic 900 MHz Day and Night Handheld monitor that's been around for a few years. Overall, I have been happy with my old video monitor but the audio was terrible and I wanted the security of digital technology.
I bought two different monitors and figured that I would give them both a try before deciding which to keep. The two I chose were the Summer Infant Best View and a Safety First High Definition monitor. I liked the features the Safety First monitor had to offer but was very disappointed at the so called High Definition video quality and size of the screen on the handheld parent unit. I would compare the video quality to be the same as my old Summer Infant unit. I found the zoom and pan feature to be annoying as it moves in a frame by frame fashion. The video is supposed to be in color during daytime viewing but it looked mostly grey and blurry. The constant beeping when using the menu and flashing of the video unit is enough to drive you nuts. Needless to say that I sent it right back for a return.
Now about the Sumer Infant Best View Handheld video monitor. I was pleasantly surprised at how large the screen is on the handheld parent unit. The picture is about as clear as you are going to get on one of these video baby monitors and there is actually color during daytime viewing. The pan and zoom feature is easy to use with the joystick type of knob and is smooth and quick to use. The audio is crystal clear with zero interference. I have a wireless network in my house that runs on a 2.4 GHz frequency (the same frequency as this monitor). The instructions warned me that there may be interference but so far I have not had a single problem (it's been about a month). The range is fantastic. My house is on an acre of land and I still had perfect reception on the monitor when I tested to see how far I can go without losing a signal. I have not tested the upper limits on the battery yet since I leave it plugged in most of the time anyway. The only drawback on the unit is that you can't add a second camera if you want to monitor two rooms. Not a problem for me but it may be for some.
I was very happy with the price I paid at Babies R Us because I used two coupons and saved almost $75 off retail. The video monitors are a little pricey but this one is definitely worth every penny!!! "
Great features and range, February 26, 2009 By BB
"The pan-and-zoom capability of this little monitor is just fantastic. We've used an older 900 MHz Summer monitor for years with our four-year old, and liked it fine, though of course once set up it couldn't be adjusted without going back into the room and risking waking her. We got this monitor for our infant when we started needing an extra monitor to watch both kids at naptime. It is so useful to be able to remotely control the zoom and where the camera is pointing! I can set it up just above the baby's crib and follow her travels from end to end, or zoom in on her face. I can set it up in my four-year-old's room and use the pan feature to watch her walk to the other end of her room to grab a toy instead of napping, or zoom in to see if her eyes are closed. The pan is quiet enough that it doesn't seem to attract their attention, even when they're awake. The video turns on and off, saving battery power and making it useful as an audio monitor when I'm napping or working. The audio turns on and off, so I don't have to worry about squawks from the monitor waking one or both kids. The reception is good, even in our very long, narrow house, and the signal penetrates our problematic brick walls as well as our wireless internet connection does, without interfering with it or with our 2.4 GHz phones.
My only complaint is that there does not seem to be an option to add another camera, and that the price is somewhat prohibitive. If cost were no object, I would be buying another to replace our older monitor."

Great for the price!, February 17, 2009 By VT Pet Doc (Vermont USA)
"I was debating on getting a video monitor for our second child. Our friends got one, and they loved it. Having a video monitor does save on "sneaking a peak" and inadvertantly waking the sleeping one with a squeaky floor! I searched and searched, and settled on this one because it was the same model as other summer infant deluxe monitors, but was much cheaper. Probably because the shipping date was listed as a few months from the time of purchase. That was fine b/c we weren't expecting the new baby for several months. The great thing was it shipped early. So now we are playing with it watching our 2 year old. The picture is fine...we do have a wireless network in the house and it does not affect it. The sound is not as clear as our original digital monitor (there is some static when turned up). OH well, we still can hear if the child wakes, and if I get really anal i can turn it up and hear breathing... "

Good product, EXCELLENT customer service, September 21, 2004 By J. O'Neill "computer user" (Bellevue, NE USA)
"July 04 I entered into the purchase of this product with some reservations. My house has a wireless network and several cordless phones (both 900Mhz and 2.4Ghz). Overall I am very HAPPY with this product. Obviously, the reception does not approach DVD quality but it does what I need. I can hear and see my daughter from anywhere in my house. The best part is the mobility of the receiver. I can clip it on my belt and travel anywhere in my house and into my yard about 150 feet. The picture is similar to a TV that only uses the old rabbit ear antenna so it will not be good for recording. I have traveled with my daughter and set up this camera in a relatives house also got a good picture.
Pros - acceptable picture excellent sound PORTABILITY
Cons - acceptable picture price
Update (Jan 07), Our monitor is now two years old and has worked flawlessly. It has survived several drops and falls. We still get good reception even in our "electronically cluttered" home. We have two wireless networks and six cordless phones operating. Recently we needed a second camera to put in our newest son's room. I ordered one online and it did not work. I called Summer Infant Inc. customer service and they immediately shipped me a replacement camera. That camera also didn't work. After some investigation with the extremely helpful customer service rep, we discovered I has an older model system (2100) and it was on a slightly different frequency than the new ones (2100a). I resigned myself to buying a new system, but Summer Infant Inc offered to upgrade my old camera and monitor so it would work with the new camera that I already had purchased. They accomplished this free of charge, even though they were under no obligation to do so.

In my opinion Summer Infant Inc has excellent customer service. If I could, I would upgrade their rating to 5 stars."

Best of the Video Monitors I've tried, September 25, 2005 By Expecting in April (Orinda, CA)
"I definitely wanted a video monitor, because my bedroom is upstairs and the baby is downstairs. Having a video monitor is great because you can check if the baby's awake or just squawking in his sleep before you go all the way in there. I've tried three: this one, the Mobi Cam, and the new Safety First version. Both the other two got constant static that caused the picture to flicker and a clicking sound to come through on the audio. This one is USUALLY static free, accept for a periodic BLARE, usually in the middle of the night. It's pretty frustating, but I've now found a low enough volume level whereby the static won't scare me out of bed when it hits but I can still hear if my son cries.
As for the other features, the "color" is pretty poor, but the night vision works fairly well. It's very nice that it's portable, and that you don't HAVE to mount the camera--you can place it on a flat surface and angle it to see. I also like that when it's unplugged, the video shuts off after a couple minutes so it doesn't drain your battery. Then you can pop it back on (or off) with the touch of a big button on top. When it's plugged in, the video will stay on all night, but I feel like it starts to get warm when I leave the picture on too long. I generally shut it off until he makes noise, then I turn on the picture to see what's going on down there.
Since I've tried THREE video monitors, and this worked the best in my house, I thought I'd pass the research along."

EXCELLENT, March 8, 2009 By Benjamin C. Skwirut (Chicago land area)
"Super sensitive. So reliable. Gives you a great peace of mind for your baby's safety before you lay your head down."

Great Monitor for Peace of Mind, January 28, 2005 By A. Moore "triece" (Bay Area,CA USA)"We have used it with the movement sensor for my son's first year and without the movement sensor for the last 6 months. (My son is now 18 months old.) We love this monitor for several reasons.

1. The monitor with movement sensor can be used in a basinet, portable crib, or a regular crib. Just make sure you put a plywood board under the sensor pad if the bottom of the basinet or crib is soft or just a spring base. This helps prevent false alarms. The sensor also packs easily in a suitcase for travel.

2. The monitor has a good range and is clear. We have a large house and yard. This monitor works at the complete opposite end of the house and throughout our yard.

3. Our son was a preemie and this monitor gave us the piece of mind to sleep at night, especially with the fear of SIDS. It truly detects movement and not just weight. (We tested it with a large dictionary and the sensor went off after a few seconds.) It picks up your child's movement from breathing even in the sounded state of sleep. When our son started rolling over and became a tummy sleeper (even though we put him to bed on his back) the monitor was the only reason I slept at night.

4. You can use this sensor in several modes. It has one mode that give an audible beep with each movement as well as detecting sounds from the nursery (for extra piece of mind and so you know it is working if you are really nervous), another mode that detects movement (and sounds) and sets off an alarm if baby does not move for 15 seconds, and the last mode lets you shut off the movement sensor and use it just as a sound monitor (great for an older baby or toddler and you don't need to buy a new monitor). We also liked that before the alarm went off, it gave a warning beep. This gave us time to go in and check on our son, before the alarm went off and woke him up. We had no false alarms with this monitor when our son was an infant, and a few when he started really moving in his sleep because he would roll off the monitor pad. It just took a little experimentation with pad placement to fix this situation.

5. Baby slept better with this monitor because we were not constantly going into his room to check on him and accidentally waking him up.

6. The monitor also has a light display that lights up more lights (in a row) when your child makes more noise. I can visually look at the monitor in the middle of the night and tell by the display if he is sleeping soundly.

7. The monitor has two bands (a & b). You can switch bands on both the nursery and parent unit if one band is getting a lot of static or interference. If you have two small children you can also use two monitors, one set to each band.

We love this monitor so much that we are planning on purchasing a second unit before the birth of our second child."

Summer Infant Day & Night Handheld Color Video Monitor 1.8" Screen White Reviews

best video monitor I've used, January 3, 2006 By C. Wilson "apricot32"
"Initially, I thought a video monitor would not be necessary - until the actual day came when it was time to move my daughter to her crib in her own room! The first monitor I tried was the Baby's Quite Sounds minature Blk & Wht TV monitor (also by summer Infant products) that we kept bed side on the night stand - reception was adequate, but the large screen casted so much light when you were trying to sleep, that you had to keep the video off and only turn it on when the baby made a noise.

Having the handheld monitor is soooooo much better! I can take it anywhere in the house and the reception is great (unless I am using it while on the cordless phone which is also 900 mHz)! We also have a wireless system is our home and we can use the monitor simultaneously without interference to either. Additionally important to note is that I have been able to use this video monitor in combination with the BeBe Sounds Anglecare Sensory Monitor (for SIDS prevention) without any difficulty or interference between them. The Angelcare Sensory Monitor is also wonderful if you are considering a SIDS monitor as well!

The only draw back is that at night the video monitor sometimes wakes me up due to static (however, this is due to where we place the monitor, and can usually be adjusted for better reception if the problem occurs).

Additionally, this monitor comes in two models with the only difference being the screen size (my model, #02100 has a 2"x2" color TFT screen or 2.8" diagonally, and the other model sold here (#02090) has a smaller 1.8" color TFT screen - you can check with the company online for store availibility & further information if you are interested in the larger 2.8" screen). Excellent Multi-purpose Monitor, August 13, 2006 By elviswoman (Dallas, TX United States)
"We are expectant parents and purchased this monitor for our nursery from a local store after carefully reviewing the return policy. We purchased the one with the silver faceplate which seems to be the newer improved model on the market. When we got it home, we ripped it out of the box and decided to test it rigorously, and we made our two dogs our test subjects. Also, we live in an older house, so we expected issues with electrical interference.

Here are our findings:

1. We were able to see our entire kitchen both in light and in the dark although the picture was somewhat grainy in the dark. We could see our dog's eyes and teeth from a distance of about 15 feet away from the camera in both conditions.
2. We took the receiver all over the house, used it in our home office, next to our refrigerator, by our cordless phone while in use, and the reception was great with occasional static pops.
3. We were able to take the receiver outside about 20 feet around the perimiter of the house with no interference.
4. We conducted similar tests placing the camera unit in other areas of our house and had no problems.
5. Sound quality is astounding, my husband could hear me talking on the phone in another room and could hear my breathing sounds between my verbal responses on the phone.

We have had this camera for about two months now and are confident it will be of great value when our baby gets here. We had one dog that kept pottying in front of our fridge and we busted him with this camera. So overall, for the money, it is a great value and can serve many different purposes. I would highly recommend it to anyone with babies, pets, elderly or disabled persons to care for. We are very happy with this purchase.

EDIT, July 2008: This product is STILL working great for us two years later! We lost the AC adapter to the handset while we were on vacation and we ordered a replacement from the manufacturer-they did not charge shipping and we got it within a week of ordering. I am pleased with the support given for this product as well as the product's performance. Again, I highly recommend! "
